First let’s talk about Assassin Creed games in general, they are a popular series of action-adventure video games made by Ubisoft. These games are known for their historical settings and the immersive open world gameplay.
The game story revolves around an ancient struggle between two secret societies. The first one is the Assassins who fight for peace with free will. the second faction of the game are the Templars who seek order and control through any means
Usually, the players play as a member of the assassins fighting the Templars, using advanced technology, the main character can access their ancestral memories that are stored in their DNA therefore playing real historical events or and talking about the culture where the game happens to occur.
Gameplay typically involves a combination of stealth, parkour, and combat as players navigate open-world environments, complete missions, and uncover the secrets of the past.
The series is known for its attention to historical detail, with each game set in a different time period, ranging from ancient Egypt and classical Greece to Renaissance Italy and Victorian London.by progressing in the story the player had to participate in major historical events encountering key historical figures.
now come to the current situation Ubisoft announced their new game “Assassin Creed shadow” that will take place in Japan, which is something that the players have been waiting for more than a decade,
In every previous Assassin Creed game when you play with a character in a country as an assassin, you usually play as a citizen of that country, participating in real historical events and telling stories about the tradition and culture of that country, and that is what the player expects when the game is announced to be in Japan.
however, the game chucked everyone because the main character was not Japanese.
The main character is Yasuke, an African slave who came to Japan with the Christian missionaries and served the great Samurai Nobunaga as a retainer. Yasuke was never a samurai neither engaged in any battle since Nobunaga valued him and was afraid of losing him in a battle, the decision of not selecting a native Japanese character that is authentic to the Japanese history made fans angry all over the world
on the official English trailer, the number of dislikes is more than double the number of likes
the situation is way worse in Japan where the Japanese trailer has more than 88% dislike, the Japanese fan base is extremely angry.
many players noted that the size and shape of the tatami is not correct also the sitting positions are wrong and a person who is a retainer will never ever Sit close to the Shogun like this
Japanese players expected a Japanese character like Miyamoto Musashi or Oda Nobunaga to represent their culture and show historical events but instead they got a character that only visited Japan for a limited time and was not even a real Samurai which they considered a distortion of historical facts and heritage.
And what made that situation worse is the pricing of the game because it is a 70 American dollar for the lowest tier and it can go up to $130 to play the full game which is extremely expensive, to put that on perspective the full price is almost 20,000 Japanese Yen which could feed the average person in Japan for more than 2 weeks.
